Jacob and his team have done great work on our two commercial pools. After the hurricane he had every opportunity to price gouge us like almost everyone is doing, but instead he gave us a very fair deal and showed up to help us get back online. Very grateful to have a good and honest pool company who has our back. Highly recommend this company.
Salt Cell Service — Cleaning, Repair, and Replacement.
Salt-chlorine generators are the cleanest way to chlorinate a pool, but the cell itself is a wear item — calcium scales onto the plates, voltage drops, and eventually chlorine production stops. Our salt cell service covers the full lifecycle: cleaning when scaling starts to drop output, repair when control boards or flow sensors fail, and clean replacement when the cell is truly at end-of-life.
When to book Salt cell.
Any pool with a Hayward Aqua Rite, Pentair IntelliChlor, Jandy AquaPure, CircuPool, or similar salt system. Most common signal: low-salt or check-cell warnings on the panel, low chlorine residual despite the system running, or visible white scale on the cell plates.
What's included
- Diagnostic: salt level test, cell voltage and amperage reading, board error code review
- Cell removal and inspection — plate condition, scaling, corrosion, end-cap integrity
- Acid bath cleaning in proper-dilution muriatic solution (10:1 water:acid for normal scaling)
- Reinstallation with new union o-rings to prevent post-service leaks
- Salt level adjustment if low (most cells need 2,700-3,400 ppm to operate)
- If replacing: new cell installed with manufacturer-matched part, calibration to your system, disposal of old cell
- Updated cell-life-remaining estimate for your records
When you need this service
Control panel shows 'check cell,' 'inspect cell,' or 'low chlorine.' Chlorine residual is consistently low despite generator running at high output. Visible scaling on the cell plates (looks like white crust between the metal plates). Cell is more than 3-5 years old and you're noticing chemistry drift. Or after a freeze event where the cell housing may have cracked.
Pricing
Cell cleaning: $80-$120 as a standalone visit (included free for weekly-service customers when needed). Cell replacement: $400-$900 depending on cell model — Pentair IntelliChlor IC40, Hayward T-Cell-15, and Jandy TruClear are the most common Pinellas-area cells. We charge the manufacturer's MSRP on the cell itself plus a flat $75 install fee — no markup on parts.
Pool service questions, answered.
What homeowners ask us most often about pool service in Salt cell.
How often should a salt cell be cleaned?
It depends on your fill water hardness and how much you run the system. Pinellas County tap water is moderately hard, so a typical cell needs an acid clean every 4-6 months. Cells on heavily-used pools or with very hard fill water might need cleaning every 2-3 months. Cells in soft-water counties may go a year between cleanings.
How long does a salt cell last?
Most quality cells (Pentair IntelliChlor, Hayward T-Cell, Jandy AquaPure) are rated for 10,000 operating hours, which works out to roughly 4-7 years for a typical Florida pool. Heavy use, hard water, or running the generator at 100% output constantly all shorten that. We track install date and hour count so you know when replacement is coming before it fails.
Why does my salt system say 'low salt' when I just added salt?
Three usual reasons: salt hasn't fully dissolved yet (give it 24 hours of pump runtime), the cell itself is reading wrong because of scaling (clean the cell), or the salt sensor has failed and needs replacement. We test salt with an external meter on every salt-cell call so we know whether the system is lying or the actual salt level is low.
Can I clean the salt cell myself?
Yes, carefully. The procedure is: power off the system, remove the cell, mix muriatic acid 10:1 with water (acid into water, never the other way), submerge the cell plates only for 5-10 minutes, rinse thoroughly with a hose, reinstall. The risks are acid splash (eye and skin damage) and over-cleaning which strips the iridium coating off the plates and kills the cell. Most of our customers prefer we just do it.
Should I switch from salt to traditional chlorine?
Almost never. Salt-water chlorination is gentler on skin and equipment, requires less hands-on chemistry, and the per-month chlorine cost is lower than tablets or liquid. The downside is upfront cost and the periodic cell replacement. If your salt system is failing, the answer is almost always replace the cell or repair the generator — not abandon the system. We'll tell you honestly when conversion makes sense (usually only after multiple cell failures suggest a deeper plumbing issue).

Pool Optics have done a great job of keeping my pool clean every week, and they are really affordable on the services they offer!
I can't say enough good things about Jacob at Pool Optics, by far the best pool service that I've had. I own an Air BnB and Jacob has always been able to keep the pool perfect for my tenants. I've been through a number of companies over the years until I found Jacob — he is a true professional who goes above and beyond.
After my pool was flooded by hurricane Helene with class three water, these guys brought it back to life — and they did it in a professional, timely, and responsive fashion! Couldn't recommend them more highly!
Thanks to Jacob at Pool Optics my pool has never looked better in the 6 years I've lived in Tampa. He's very knowledgeable and easy to work with. Would recommend to anyone. 5 stars!
A+ service in my book! Jacob was very educated on pools and chemicals and helped me get my pool from green to crystal clear in no time. Will definitely recommend and use again!
Stellar service! If you're looking for a solid pool company that answers immediately and gets you in early — this is your stop. Jacob is incredible. We purchased a home in Oldsmar with a heated salt water pool and had no clue what to do. Within 3 days he was out, cleaned the pool, and even cleared a TON of debris off our cage. Highly recommend!
Hired them to do my mom's pool. Her remarks were: responsive, excellent communication, and punctual. We will be using this service again.
Pool Optics is always on time. Jacob knows just how to keep the pool for my guests perfectly. Couldn't ask for better service.
