Jacob and his team have done great work on our two commercial pools. After the hurricane he had every opportunity to price gouge us like almost everyone is doing, but instead he gave us a very fair deal and showed up to help us get back online. Very grateful to have a good and honest pool company who has our back. Highly recommend this company.
Pool Algae Treatment — Green, Mustard, and Black.
Algae treatment is the targeted protocol we use to identify and kill the specific algae species in your pool, then prevent it from coming back. Not all algae respond to the same treatment — green algae floats and clears fast, mustard algae clings to walls and hides from chlorine, and black algae roots into porous surfaces and demands a different chemistry entirely.
When to book Algae treatment.
Pools showing visible algae growth — green tint, yellow-brown patches on the sunny walls, dark spots on the plaster, or a slick film on the steps. Also pools that keep relapsing despite weekly chlorine treatment.
What's included
- Visual identification of algae type — green (free-floating), mustard (yellow, walls), or black (rooted, plaster)
- Phosphate test (high phosphates feed algae and are usually the underlying cause)
- Targeted treatment: chlorine shock for green, mustard-algae-specific algaecide plus brush for yellow, copper-based treatment for black
- Manual brushing of affected surfaces to break up the colony's protective biofilm
- Phosphate remover to eliminate the food source
- Filter cleaning post-treatment so dead algae doesn't recirculate
- Follow-up chemistry check 48-72 hours later to confirm the treatment held
When you need this service
Water is green or has a green tint. Yellow or mustard-colored patches on the shaded sides of the pool that wipe off but come back. Black spots on plaster or grout lines that don't brush away. Or chlorine consumption that's significantly higher than your pool size should require — usually a sign of an algae bloom even before it's visible.
Pricing
Algae treatment as a standalone service runs $150–$400 depending on type and severity. Green algae is the cheapest to clear; black algae the most expensive because it often requires multiple treatments over 1-2 weeks. If you're already on our weekly service, mild algae treatment is included — only severe blooms or black algae trigger an additional charge.
Pool service questions, answered.
What homeowners ask us most often about pool service in Algae treatment.
How do I know if I have algae or just cloudy water?
Color is the cleanest tell. Green tint (even slight) is almost always green algae. Cloudy white or milky water without color is usually a filter issue or calcium scaling. Yellow-brown patches that wipe off walls but reappear are mustard algae. Dark spots that don't move under a brush are black algae.
Why does my pool keep getting algae even with chlorine?
Usually one of three things: phosphates from fertilizer runoff, lawn cuttings, or fill water are feeding the bloom faster than chlorine can kill it; the chlorine stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is too high and your free chlorine is locked up; or the filter is bypassing and not actually capturing dead algae. We diagnose which on the first visit.
Is algae treatment safe for pets?
Yes for the routine chlorine and algaecide treatments. The exception is copper-based black-algae products — copper is toxic to dogs if ingested in large quantities. We let you know in advance if your treatment plan includes copper and recommend keeping pets away from drinking pool water for 24 hours.
How long until the pool is swimmable after algae treatment?
Green algae: usually 24-48 hours. Mustard algae: 48-72 hours since it takes time to dislodge the protective film. Black algae: 5-7 days for a single round; sometimes two rounds of treatment are needed before the pool is back to baseline.
Can I prevent algae from coming back?
Yes — by holding chlorine residual above 2.0 ppm 24/7, keeping cyanuric acid below 50 ppm so chlorine stays free and active, brushing walls weekly, and using a phosphate remover monthly during summer. Weekly service handles all of that automatically, which is why pools on regular routes rarely see repeat blooms.

Pool Optics have done a great job of keeping my pool clean every week, and they are really affordable on the services they offer!
I can't say enough good things about Jacob at Pool Optics, by far the best pool service that I've had. I own an Air BnB and Jacob has always been able to keep the pool perfect for my tenants. I've been through a number of companies over the years until I found Jacob — he is a true professional who goes above and beyond.
After my pool was flooded by hurricane Helene with class three water, these guys brought it back to life — and they did it in a professional, timely, and responsive fashion! Couldn't recommend them more highly!
Thanks to Jacob at Pool Optics my pool has never looked better in the 6 years I've lived in Tampa. He's very knowledgeable and easy to work with. Would recommend to anyone. 5 stars!
A+ service in my book! Jacob was very educated on pools and chemicals and helped me get my pool from green to crystal clear in no time. Will definitely recommend and use again!
Stellar service! If you're looking for a solid pool company that answers immediately and gets you in early — this is your stop. Jacob is incredible. We purchased a home in Oldsmar with a heated salt water pool and had no clue what to do. Within 3 days he was out, cleaned the pool, and even cleared a TON of debris off our cage. Highly recommend!
Hired them to do my mom's pool. Her remarks were: responsive, excellent communication, and punctual. We will be using this service again.
Pool Optics is always on time. Jacob knows just how to keep the pool for my guests perfectly. Couldn't ask for better service.
