What cyanuric acid actually is

Cyanuric acid is chlorine's sunscreen. It bonds loosely with free chlorine in the water and shields it from ultraviolet light. Without it, Florida's sun destroys unprotected chlorine fast — on a bright St. Pete afternoon, an unstabilized pool can lose most of its free chlorine in a matter of hours. The ranges you actually want

There is no single 'correct' CYA number — it depends on how you chlorinate:

  • Traditional chlorine pools:30–50 ppm. Enough protection to hold a residual through the day without demanding huge chlorine doses.
  • Salt-chlorine pools:60–80 ppm. Salt cells generate chlorine slowly and continuously, so a slightly higher stabilizer level protects that steady trickle from burning off.
  • The danger zone: problems start creeping in past ~80 ppm on a chlorine pool and above ~90–100 ppm on a salt pool. By 100–150 ppm, most homeowners are fighting algae they can't explain.

Why Florida pools drift high

CYA has one property that trips up almost everyone: it does not burn off, evaporate, or get consumedthe way chlorine does. The only way it leaves your pool is by physically removing water — splash-out, backwashing, or a partial drain. Everything else just adds more. Here's how it climbs:

  • Trichlor tablets and pucks.This is the big one. Every trichlor tab is roughly half stabilizer by weight. Each one you drop in the floater or feeder adds CYA that never leaves. Run tablets all summer and you can easily add 30–50 ppm of stabilizer in a season without touching a bag of it.
  • Adding stabilizer directly.A well-meaning 'shock and stabilize' product, or a heavy hand with granular CYA at start-up, spikes the number in one dose.
  • Dichlor shock.Like trichlor, dichlor carries stabilizer with it — another slow, invisible climb.
  • Never diluting. A screened, covered, or low-splash pool loses very little water to overflow, so nothing ever flushes the CYA back down.

The 'chlorine lock' myth

You'll hear people say high CYA 'locks up' your chlorine. That's not what happens, and the distinction matters because the myth leads to the wrong fix (dumping in more shock, which if it's dichlor makes CYA worse).

CYA doesn't lock chlorine — it slows it down. The more stabilizer in the water, the smaller the fraction of your free chlorine that's actually available to kill algae and bacteria at any given moment. To keep the same sanitizing punch, you simply need proportionally more free chlorine.

The rule of thumb the pool-chemistry world uses: free chlorine should sit around 7.5% of your CYA level to hold normal sanitizing power. Do the math and the trap becomes obvious:

  • At CYA 40, about 3 ppm free chlorine does the job.
  • At CYA 100, you need roughly 7–8 ppm free chlorine to get the exact same effect.

So a '3 ppm, looks perfect' reading at CYA 100 is actually an underpowered pool — the chlorine is there on the test, but spread too thin to keep up. That gap is where algae wins.

Symptoms of high CYA

High cyanuric acid rarely announces itself. It hides behind 'normal' test readings, which is exactly why it's so frustrating. Watch for:

  • Algae despite a 'fine' chlorine reading. Green film on the walls or steps while your free chlorine tests 1–3 ppm is the classic signature.
  • Constantly high chlorine demand.You add chlorine, it vanishes, you add more — because it can never quite get ahead of organics at that CYA level.
  • Cloudy or dull waterthat won't clear even though every number looks acceptable.
  • Recurring blooms in the same spots— often mustard or green algae that keep coming back after you shock.

How to actually lower cyanuric acid

Because CYA doesn't break down, you can't chemical your way out of it the way you can with pH or alkalinity. There are really only two reliable methods, plus one product that mostly disappoints.

  1. Partial drain and refill (dilution).The workhorse fix. Fresh, low-CYA tap water lowers the concentration in direct proportion: swap out roughly the same percentage of water as the percentage you want CYA to drop — to cut a 150 ppm reading in half, replace about half the pool. We stage it in two or three smaller swaps to protect the plaster and keep chemistry stable.
  2. Mobile reverse-osmosis (RO) filtration.A specialty RO truck filters your existing water on-site, stripping CYA (and salts and TDS) while keeping most of the water in the pool. It costs more up front but wastes far less water — a real advantage in Florida, where a full drain is genuinely risky.
  3. CYA-reducer products.Enzyme/biological reducers exist, but they work slowly, inconsistently, and only knock down modest amounts. For a pool at 150 ppm, they're not a serious answer — dilution is.

Preventing the climb in the first place

Once you've reset CYA, keeping it in range is mostly about how you chlorinate:

  • Get off trichlor tablets. Switch your primary chlorination to liquid chlorine (sodium hypochlorite), which adds zero stabilizer, or to a salt system, which generates chlorine without piling on CYA. This one is specific to us and it's important: do not fully drain your pool to reset cyanuric acid.
